How Metalock repairs cast iron castings

When we repair cast iron castings, we do so by peening layers of specially manufactured 'keys' into prepared apertures in the surface under repair. Each 'multi-dumbbell' shaped key is made from special nickel alloys and is highly ductile. Because of this, the keys are easily peened into a metal-to-metal condition where they are almost integral with the metal of the engineering component that is being mended.

Our keys are all custom manufactured to suit each job. Their high strength and the expertise with which they are applied ensures that each repair achieves a high percentage of the original strength.

Advantages of the Metalock process

The unique Metalock repair process differs from conventional welding because it does not introduce unwanted heat stresses and resultant component distortion. In many cases, the repair doesn't require any additional machining. Because of these advantages, the process is valuable where emergency repairs to cast iron components are required and customers are keen to reduce downtime and the cost of purchasing expensive replacement castings.

The process has been particularly useful in the marine industry where it has saved millions of pounds for ship owners after machinery breakdowns. Cost-effective repairs on site or in our workshops

We can often repair cast iron components on site. Doing this eliminates the costs of removing damaged equipment and transporting it to a repair workshop. Smaller equipment items can of course be repaired in our workshops if you prefer this.
